The Sweet Silver Song of a Lark

There are many famous football teams but when the fans of a team are equally famous you know there is something special happening. Such is the case with the  fans of Liverpool FC. They are famous for singing the song ‘Walk On’ by Gerry and the Pacemakers and for being such lovers of the beautiful game that they will applaud the skills of opponents.

Recently I was in a Madrid bar to watch the final of the soccer Champions League – Real Madrid versus Liverpool. I became a scouser for the day. I found myself sitting next to a Madrid fan. When Madrid scored I, along with the other day-tripper scousers, sang ‘Walk On‘. And when they scored again and ..again, I sang with even more feeling. And at the end of the game when the Liverpool dreams were vanished into thin air and even as I shook hands with Madrid fans, I sang it again.

The man sitting next to me could not understand how I could sing in the face of such adversity. He probably thought that singing is something to do with entertainment. It isn’t. It’s about spirit. We sing because, like larks, we can.

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There’s a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
